Our Hygiene Services

Good oral hygiene is essential for maintaining a healthy mouth and preventing future problems. At Hexham Dental Clinic, our hygiene team provides a range of treatments designed to keep your teeth and gums in excellent condition, tailored to your individual needs.

Whether you are attending for routine maintenance or require more advanced care, our hygienists deliver gentle, effective treatment using the latest techniques.

Perio 1 Visit

Routine Gum Health Maintenance

Ideal for patients whose gum health is stable and who do not have gum disease.

A Perio 1 visit focuses on maintaining healthy gums and fresh breath by:

Gently removing light plaque and tartar

Managing minimal staining

Providing simple scaling and polishing

Helping prevent gum disease from developing

Offering tailored advice to support your home care

This visit is often suitable for patients who attend regularly and do not have signs of active gum disease.

Perio 2 Visit

Enhanced Periodontal Maintenance

A Perio 2 visit is recommended when gum health is less stable, or when there is more extensive tartar or staining present.

We may suggest a Perio 2 appointment if:

There is a higher level of plaque or tartar build-up

Staining is more noticeable

Early signs of gum instability or if inflammation is present

This visit allows your hygienist to carry out a more thorough clean to help stabilise your gum health and prevent further progression.

Perio 3 Visit

Advanced Periodontal Care

For patients with diagnosed gum disease or deeper gum pockets, we provide Perio 3 visits tailored to managing more advanced periodontal needs.

A Perio 3 appointment may include:

Intensive cleaning beneath the gums (deep periodontal pockets)

Removal of significant tartar deposits, often hidden under the gumline

Clearing inflammation and, where present, pus from infected areas

Managing heavy staining

Use of local anaesthetic where necessary for comfort

Patients with more advanced gum disease often require Perio 3 visits to help stabilise their periodontal health over time.

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

A modern, gentle and highly advanced hygiene experience

For patients seeking the most refined and technologically advanced approach to dental hygiene, we are delighted to offer Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) using the latest EMS AIRFLOW® and PIEZON® systems.

GBT uses a controlled combination of warm water, air and an ultra-fine powder to remove plaque, biofilm and staining with exceptional comfort and precision. This makes it particularly beneficial for patients with:

Dental implants

Composite bonding, veneers or crowns

Sensitivity during traditional cleaning

Areas that are difficult to clean at home

Heavier staining

A preference for the most advanced hygiene technology available

Availability is currently limited due to the increased level of time involved in the sessions, so if you would like to upgrade to GBT, we recommend speaking to a member of our team as early as possible.

Your hygienist will always advise whether GBT is likely to be especially beneficial based on your gum health, dental history and personal preferences.
